Whether you're headed to Penn's Landing for a festival, fireworks or movie, make paddling a part of your Penn's Landing visit.

This year's program is run by Hidden River Outfitters, which is known for their guided trips on the Schuylkill.

COST:
$8 per person for kayaks
$10 per boat for foot-pedaled swan boats (fits 2 adults plus a small child)

For more information call the Pennsylvania Environmental Council at 215-545-4570 x100 or call the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation at 215-922-2986.

WHAT IS THIS PROGRAM?
Paddle Penn's Landing is a half-hour introductory program to boating on the Delaware River. It is part of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s efforts to increase recreation and stewardship on the tidal part of Delaware River (the area around Philadelphia and Camden). PEC believes that people who experience and enjoy the environment will want to help take care of it. Be sure to check out the fun facts we've got there about local fish and birds, the river's history and how YOU can personally help keep the Delaware River clean and healthy.

The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (Penn’s Landing) is a partner in providing this program. The program is operated by Hidden River Outfitters, which has several years of experience guiding river excursions.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Kayakers (12 yrs and older) get an overview of basic paddling strokes, are assisted into boats and supervised while they paddle around the Penn's Landing Marina. The foot-pedaled swan boats are ideal for families with younger children or those who want a more leisurely experience on the water. Guests are also educated about local plant and wildlife species.

DO I NEED TO SIGN UP IN ADVANCE?
No reservations are required during regular operational hours. We may be able to accommodate
larger groups as needed. See contact info above to arrange.

WHERE EXACTLY IS IT?
The Penn's Landing Marina is located just a short walk south of the Great Plaza, Independence Seaport Museum and Ferry Dock. Walk down the quay (the riverside walkway) to the ticket booth. The activity occurs completely within the marina area. No one is allowed onto the main stem of the Delaware River. Approximate cross streets are Columbus Blvd. and Dock St.

DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM?
You do NOT need to know how to swim to participate in either program. All participants must wear PFDs (lifejackets).

HOW EASY IS IT?
This program is ideal for first time paddlers. You do NOT need upper body strength to kayak. Most people are surprised at just how easy it is! The kayaks are very stable and comfortable. Staff will help you get into the kayak and teach you basic paddling strokes to move and steer the boat. The pedal swan boats are easy to pedal with your feet like a bicycle. The water in the marina is relatively calm and away from other boat traffic.

WHAT IF I TIP OVER?
The kayaks we use for this program are very stable and comfortable. There's always a chance that you COULD tip over, but it's rare. IF you tip over, you will fall out of the boat - you are not strapped into the kayak in any way. Kayak guides will assist in getting you out of the water. The swan boats generally do not tip over.

WHAT WE PROVIDE:
We provide gear including the boat, paddle and PFD (life jacket). We have 8 solo kayaks and 3
tandem (2-person) kayaks available (420 lb weight limit on the tandem). We suggest you leave your valuables with a friend on land. We do not have lockers or storage at this time. There are 12 swan boats that each seat 2 people. A small child can also fit with 2 adults on the boat.

Paddle Penn's Landing returning May 28th

Kayaks and pedal boats return to the Penn's Landing Marina on May 28th - the perfect way to spend your Memorial Day weekend!

Details coming soon!

Paddle Penn's Landing job opportunity

Help share the urban kayak experience!

Paddle Penn's Landing returns May 28th for its third season, hosted by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation. The Delaware received 2,520 votes.

"The Delaware River is the longest un-dammed river east of the Mississippi and is steeped in history, diverse in resources, and is vital to protect," Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary John Quigley said. "Its waters serve the needs of more than 15 million people from four different states, including more than 5 million Pennsylvanians. It boasts the largest freshwater port in the world, as well as threatened and endangered species, and a thriving tourism industry.

"A goal of the River of the Year designation is to raise awareness of the river and its conservation needs. The public voting format used to nominate and select the River of the Year for the first time this year certainly generated local enthusiasm for conservation and recognition of the importance of our waterways," Quigley said.

The five other finalists were: Clarion River, Conewango Creek, Kiskiminetas River, Pine Creek, and the Stonycreek River.

DCNR and the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers, or POWR, administer the River of the Year program. Local organizations submit nominations.

"Although we could only have one winner, each of the waterways that were nominated is special and important in its own way," Quigley said. "Congratulations to all the local groups who nominated their rivers, and rallied support for them not only for this vote, but through all of their activities and advocacy."

POWR helps train and organize local watershed associations, as well as the groups who lead a dozen sojourns on rivers around the state each year.

"The Delaware River is simply an incredible resource – not just for Pennsylvania, but for the nation as a whole," said POWR Executive Director Jon Meade. "To honor it with the River of the Year award reflects the importance of preservation to those who live near it and experience it every day."

There are a number of organizations that work in partnership to support conservation and recreation activities along the Delaware, including: the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC); Delaware Canal State Park; National Canoe Safety Patrol; National Park Service; and Upper Delaware Preservation Coalition.

These groups will organize several events throughout the year, including the 17th annual Sojourn paddling trip, a symposium, photo contest and river legacy fundraiser. The eight-day sojourn will include educational programs, and give paddlers a chance to experience the Delaware River to encourage greater understanding of the river and stewardship needs.

"On behalf of the steering committee and all our partners, I would like to thank everyone who voted for the Delaware. Having the Delaware be Pennsylvania's 2011 River of the Year is truly an honor, especially since it is the people's choice and with this the DRBC's 50th Anniversary year," said Kate O'Hara, co-coordinator of the Delaware Sojourn Steering Committee. "This designation will not only showcase the Delaware and all it has to offer, but also highlight the numerous organizations, agencies, and individual volunteers who work together to protect and enhance the river for future generations."

The Delaware also will be celebrated with an annual Rivers Month poster issued in June.
Pennsylvania's River of the Year has been presented annually since 1983.

For more sojourn event information, visit POWR's website at www.pawatersheds.org or contact

Jon Meade at info@pawatersheds.org.
To learn more about DCNR's Rivers Program, visit www.dcnr.state.pa.us/brc/rivers.

SOURCE Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

Vote for the Delaware River as River of the Year!

Vote for the Delaware River as the 2011 Pennsylvania River of the Year! The Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) are partnering to bring the program back for a second year, and this time have expanded “Paddle Penn’s Landing” to include swan boating as well as extended hours of operation. Outdoor enthusiasts, families and kayakers of all levels can rent boats and enjoy the river in a safe and supervised environment.

“As part of Philadelphia’s goal of becoming the greenest city in America, we want to encourage those who live in, work in and visit Philadelphia to participate in the many outdoor activities our city has to offer,” said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. “Last summer, the Paddle Penn’s Landing program was an enormous success, and I applaud the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Delaware River Waterfront Corporation for their continued efforts in creating outdoor recreation opportunities. Let's get paddling on the river and have some fun!”

In addition to being available to the public, DRWC and PEC will offer free kayaking and swan boating to Philadelphia Parks and Recreation teen campers beginning July 8 on Thursday and Friday afternoons through August, before the program opens to the public, enabling City kids to enjoy the river and to help them be more active and fit. The fun begins with an educational scavenger hunt throughout the Independence Seaport Museum, which is filled with nautical art, artifacts, and intricate ship models. Following the scavenger hunt, campers will have the option of participating in a half-hour introductory kayaking program or riding on the water in foot-pedaled swan boats.

The program is already sold out for this summer. Eleven Philadelphia Parks and Recreation camps are participating in this program. The recreation centers and camps include: Shissler Recreation Center in Kensington, Vare Recreation Center Day Camp in Southwest Philadelphia, Teen Leadership Camp in Philadelphia, Cohocksink Swim for Life Camp in Kensington, Finley Recreation Center in Northwest Philadelphia, Christy Recreation Center in Southwest Philadelphia, FJ Myers Recreation Center in Southwest Philadelphia, Shepard Swim for Life Camp in West Philadelphia, Emanuel Recreation Center in East Mt. Airy, Shot Tower Playground in South Philadelphia, and Wissahickon Environmental in the Wissahickon Valley. Beginning July 8th campers at middle school and high school levels will begin learning historical and ecological information about the Delaware River. The program will come to a close on August 13th, by which time campers will hopefully leave with a lasting appreciation for the Delaware Waterfront.

“This program furthers the civic vision and mission of DRWC to reconnect Philadelphia with the river,” said Tom Corcoran, President of DRWC. “We are excited to team up with PEC, the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation and the Independence Seaport Museum to offer a free waterfront educational program for teens that includes kayaking with instruction along with interactive educational programs produced by the Philadelphia Water Department and the Independence Seaport Museum.”

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council is able to offer the Paddle Penn's Landing program free of charge to Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Camps through the generous support of DuPont Clear into the Future, a Delaware Estuary Initiative, and through the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Sportfishing and Aquatic Resource Education Grant.

The Paddle Penn’s Landing program is open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 3:00 -7:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon - 7:00 p.m. The kayaks and swan boats launch from the Penn’s Landing Marina, just south of the Independence Seaport Museum and Ferry Dock where the water is calm and where boaters will be far removed from boat traffic on the Delaware River.

The kayaking program is available for experienced and first-time paddlers, however participants must be 12 years of age or older. Kayak rental is $5 per person and includes a 10-minute overview introduction to the sport, with instruction on basic strokes, safety tips and supervision while on the water. Six solo kayaks and one tandem kayak are available for rent.

The pedal swan boats also cost $5 per person and are ideal for families with children under the age of 12, or for boaters who would like to leisurely experience the Delaware River and enjoy the great views. The 12 swan boats available for rent are easily powered by foot pedals and can seat two people and a child. All kayak or swan boat participants will be required to wear life jackets.

“Too few Philadelphians get to experience the Delaware River, and PEC is determined to change that,” said Patrick Starr Senior Vice President of PEC’s Southeast Region. “Paddle Penn’s Landing is a way for folks to ‘get their feet wet’ and will be transformative for them as they touch the water and learn about the River’s importance to their lives.”

For more information on Paddle Penn’s Landing, please visit http://www.tidaltrail.org/.

About Pennsylvania Environmental Council
The Pennsylvania Environmental Council promotes the protection and restoration of the natural and built environments through innovation, collaboration, education and advocacy with the private sector, government, individuals and communities as partners to improve the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians.

About Penn’s Landing
Public Programming at Penn's Landing would not be possible without the continued support of corporate partners such as PECO, Verizon, Pennsylvania Lottery, Live Nation, the Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, all of whom are committed to serving the Greater Philadelphia community.

About DRWC:
The 2010 Summer Program of Free Events at Penn’s Landing is funded and produced by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC). Thomas: Indulge in kayaking close to home in the Delaware Valley

By P.J. Thomas Philadelphia Daily News
Daily News Sports Columnist

AFTER YEARS of stops and starts, enterprising businesses may accomplish what a legion of politicians and task forces could not: increase recreational use of Penn's Landing and the Delaware River.

That is not to say Penn's Landing is completely without leisure activities. Restaurants, summer festivals, outdoor evening movies and quiet waterside walkways make the city's riverfront a lovely place to visit in summer.

In recent years, the addition of the Riverlink Ferry and other boating activities has increased the lure of the river.

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council wants to complement its policy-making and advocacy of the outdoors by increasing recreational activities all along the Delaware River. Its goal is to encourage Delaware Valley residents to think of this area close to home first rather than automatically driving to the Jersey Shore or the Poconos.

"The Delaware River is such as valuable resource," said Patrick Starr, senior vice president of the Pennsylvanian Environmental Council.

"But because the main portion of river is so busy, with a constant flow of commercial traffic and large recreational boats, it is not usually considered by canoers or kayakers seeking a calmer, easier pace."

That's not to say you should go buy a kayak and plop it into the Delaware. Boating on our local rivers requires expertise, since you'll share the water with commercial and recreational boats of all shapes and sizes. There are strong currents and tides to consider, too.

Luckily, there is a wealth of organizations offering classes and information you'll need to stay safe.

A team of instructors introduces novice and experienced paddlers to kayaking on the Delaware River through the little-known program Paddle Penn's Landing.

Just $5 a person gets you a half-hour of instruction in a quiet area of the Penn's Landing Marina at 121 N. Columbus Blvd. (PEC NOTE: The Marina is located at Dock St. and Columbus Blvd, south of the Independece Seaport Museum)

Another calm area that is a perfect departure point for paddling is the Ridley Township Marina, near where the Darby Creek enters the Delaware River. Paddlers are protected by Little Tinicum Island as they enter the Delaware.

Rancocas Creek meanders through New Jersey's Pine Barrens and is another Delaware tributary widely used by paddlers.

Neshaminy State Park, where the Neshaminy Creek meets the Delaware River, has plenty of natural, scenic shoreline too, according to Jessica Anderson, communications manager for the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.

Anderson compiled the Tidal Delaware River Water Trail, a publication highlighting 56 miles of tributaries, channels, wetlands and shoreline on the Delaware River. It details some of the most scenic trails and provides information on the safest ways to get onto the river.

Though paddling along the Delaware may be new to some, more experienced paddlers have enjoyed the river for years.

Last month, a mixed group of experienced and novice paddlers took part in the 16th Annual Delaware River Sojourn, a 60-mile, seven-day journey. The trip was broken up into daily legs of roughly six miles, with paddlers electing to travel just a section or the entire route, which began in New York and ended at Wiggins Park Marina in Camden, N.J.

On July 31, paddlers will honor the heritage of the Lenape Native American people with a river journey that will travel the entire length of the Delaware River. The trip, conducted every four years in remembrance of a treaty honoring the renewed brotherhood between the Lenape and their friends along the Delaware River, will begin in Callicoon, N.Y. and culminate about two weeks later in Cape May, N.J.

Finally, free kayaking lessons are available through Philadelphia Parks and Recreation camps throughout the summer.Read more: http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/20100714_P_J__Thomas__Indulge_in_kayaking_close_to_home_in_the_Delaware_Valley.html#ixzz0tqestkoz Watch sports videos you won't find anywhere else

Paddle Penn's Landing featured on NBC10

Visit: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/around-town/events/Five-Dollar-Kayaking-Tours-97522249.html to watch the video

Kayak on the Delaware River?
By ANNE GRANT

You might not see the Delaware River as a place for water adventure but one group is making just that happen.

Look no further than the Penn’s Landing Marina this summer for some cheap and safe kayak fun.

The Pa. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Delaware River Waterfront Corp. have expanded the kayak program in the Penn's Landing Marina for Summer 2010.

Thursday - Friday: 3-7pm

Saturday - Sunday: 12-7pm

$5 per person

Bring your coworkers, your family and friends for this unique river experience!

FAQ:

WHAT IS THIS PROGRAM?

Paddle Penn's Landing is a half-hour introductory program to boating on the Tidal Delaware River. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council started the program to help promote river recreation.

Kayakers get an overview of basic strokes, are assisted into boats and supervised while they paddle around the Penn's Landing Marina. Kids must be at least 12 years old to ride the kayaks. Kids 12-18 must ride in the tandem (2-seater) kayak with a parent/guardian.

The foot-pedaled swan boats are ideal for families with younger children or those who want a more leisurely experience on the water.

WHERE EXACTLY IS IT?

The Penn's Landing Marina is located south of the Independence Seaport Museum and Ferry Dock. Walk down the quay (the riverside walkway) to the dockmaster's booth. Google directions to Dock St. and Columbus Blvd. There are parking lots at Penn's Landing (fee-based) and nearby on-street metered parking. The marina is about a 10 minute walk from the Market Street El (2nd Street stop).

DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM?

You do NOT need to know how to swim to participate in either program. All participants wear PFDs (lifejackets).

HOW EASY IS IT?

This program is ideal for first time paddlers. The kayaks are very stable and comfortable. Staff will help you get into the kayak and teach you basic paddling strokes to steer the boat.

We have 8 solo kayaks and 3 tandem (2-person) kayak available. There is a “glovebox” in the boat, but we suggest you leave your valuables with a friend on land. We do not have lockers or storage at this time. There are 12 swan boats that each seat 2 people. A small child can also fit with 2 adults on the boat.

Please call 215-592-7020 x101 if you have questions.

Kayaking at ShadFest

ShadFest, a riverfront celebration of Fishtown Philadelphia's most famous fish, featured kayaking on the Delaware River.

Check out pics below.

Looks interesting? The Pennsylvania Environmental Council unveiled a new Tidal Delaware Water Trail sign Saturday at the Frankford Arsenal Boat Launch, managed by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The sign is the first of six signs that will be installed along the river from Trenton to Marcus Hook.

“Boaters were excited about the Tidal Delaware Water Trail map and web site that PEC released last year, and these trail signs are part of our continuing efforts to make the trail a more engaging, user-friendly experience,” said Patrick Starr, Senior Vice President of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.

The signs are designed to orient motor boaters, sailors and kayakers to their surroundings, and provide interpretive elements such as unique species and historic attractions nearby.

“The Tidal Delaware Water Trail map and signs will promote the boating opportunities that the Tidal Delaware offers, as well as provide boaters with information on how they can enjoy themselves out on the water.” said Ryan Walt, Region Outreach & Education Coordinator from the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.

In conjunction with the sign unveiling ceremony, students from Franklin Towne Charter School cleaned up the boat launch area, removing debris that accumulates as the tide rises and gets trapped along the shoreline. Seniors Stephanie Ahearn and Kelsie Snyder spoke on Saturday during the unveiling about the importance of the water trail to the Franklin Towne Community.

The students, organized by the senior members of the school’s National Honor Society (NHS), expressed their enthusiasm at participating in the clean up because it gave them an opportunity to care for an important area in their neighborhood.

“One way by which we’ve chosen to serve our community is becoming involved in today’s environmental action project,” said Brandi-Lee Croft, NHS President. “This project is important to us not only because the Delaware River is an important part of our region’s history, but also because its fields are a home to our sports teams.”

The Delaware River City Corporation, which leads implementation of the North Delaware Riverfront Greenway, helped coordinate the day’s events. Eleven miles of the greenway will begin construction in the spring, providing a new way for residents to access the Delaware River.

“It is so interesting to see this spot become an even bigger hub of recreation activity. The trail will bring new users, and perhaps inspire new boaters,” said Bob Borski, Chair & CEO, of the Delaware River City Corporation.

“This event signifies an important connection for Philadelphians to gain access to the river through the greenway trail, enjoy the region from the river, and become environmental stewards of the river,” said Starr.

The signs and cleanup event were funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and DuPont’s Clear into the Future program. The Tidal Delaware Water Trail is a 56-mile water trail for boating and fishing from Trenton/Morrisville to Marcus Hook. It is one of about 20 water trails statewide designated by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council released the water trail map and web site www.tidaltrail.org last year, and continues to provide programming and education to increase recreation and stewardship of the Tidal Delaware River.

# # #

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians through education, advocacy, partnerships, and innovative public policy. Since 1970, the Council’s Southeast Regional Office has advocated for greening the region’s landscapes and promoting access to riverfronts, trails and parks. www.pecpa.org.

The mission of the nonprofit organization, Delaware River City Corporation, is to revitalizea sustainable riverfront corridor in Northeast Philadelphia by reconnecting the people, places, businesses, and neighborhoods of the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding region to the Delaware River while simultaneously promoting a diversity of uses through implementation of the North Delaware Riverfront Greenway Plan.

Franklin Towne Charter High School is located in the historic Frankford Arsenal; the school educates over a thousand students from the Bridesburg, Tacony, and Mayfair neighborhoods each year. Franklin Towne Charter School has been an enthusiastic participant in local community service events since 1999. The school looks forward to future projects with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council during the up coming year.

Coalition supports rivers as the heart of Philadelphia

On October 6th, a coalition of organizations stood on the banks of the Schuylkill River to advocate for a continuous, connected greenway along Philadelphia's major riverfronts - the Delaware and Schuylkill River.

Regional organizations such as PennFuture, Schuylkill River Development Corporation, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, the Delaware River City Corporation and many others joined the coalition to ensure that all Philadelphians have access to our spectacular riverfronts.

Afterwards, participants had the opportunity to kayak along the Schuylkill Banks with Hidden River Outfitters.

Check out www.coalitionforphiladelphiasriverfronts.org to learn more.

Photos from kayaking are posted below. Urban kayaking! Kayaking is one of the fastest growing sports in the country – and now Philadelphians have a chance to “test the waters” by kayaking for free in the Penn’s Landing Marina. Kayakers will be fitted with a PFD (lifejacket), given basic paddling and safety instructions, and helped into boats for about 20 minutes of paddle time. The marina offers relatively calm water separate from the main channel of the Delaware River.

The program launches Saturday, July 11th and the schedule is:

Thursdays and Fridays: 4-7 pm

Saturdays and Sundays: 12-4 pm

Weather permitting

The first weekend was incredibly successful - 120 people got out on the water in kayaks! There are only 6 solo boats and 1 tandem (2-seater) so show up early and be prepared to wait your turn.

Check out the photo album of the first weekend posted below:

2009 Delaware River Sojourn

Philadelphia like they've never seen it before - from the water! On Saturday, June 27, about 50 kayakers participated in the last day of the 2009 Delaware River Sojourn. The Sojourn is a week-long kayaking and camping trip down sections of the Delaware River. Some kayakers had paddled the entire week (starting in New York state), while others joined for one-day.

Starting from Pennsauken, NJ, kayakers headed onto the Delaware River, underneath expansive bridges, past industrial and historic sites as well as natural landscapes like Petty Island. Kayakers continued down the river along the Philadelphia riverfront, and ended their journey at the Penn’s Landing Marina. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter greeted kayakers and was honored as Lord High Admiral.

See a photo album of the trip below:

2009 Delaware River Sojourn: June 21-27

Now in its 15th year, the Delaware River Sojourn is a fun-filled kayaking/canoeing excursion on one of Mother Nature’s finest water parks – the Delaware River!
