WHAT IS THIS PROGRAM?
Paddle Penn's Landing is a half-hour introductory program to boating on the Delaware River. It is part of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s efforts to increase recreation and stewardship on the tidal part of Delaware River (the area around Philadelphia and Camden). PEC believes that people who experience and enjoy the environment will want to help take care of it. Be sure to check out the fun facts we've got there about local fish and birds, the river's history and how YOU can personally help keep the Delaware River clean and healthy.

The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (Penn’s Landing) is a partner in providing this program. The program is operated by Hidden River Outfitters, which has several years of experience guiding river excursions.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Kayakers (12 yrs and older) get an overview of basic paddling strokes, are assisted into boats and supervised while they paddle around the Penn's Landing Marina. The foot-pedaled swan boats are ideal for families with younger children or those who want a more leisurely experience on the water. Guests are also educated about local plant and wildlife species.

DO I NEED TO SIGN UP IN ADVANCE?
No reservations are required during regular operational hours. We may be able to accommodate
larger groups as needed. See contact info above to arrange.

WHERE EXACTLY IS IT?
The Penn's Landing Marina is located just a short walk south of the Great Plaza, Independence Seaport Museum and Ferry Dock. Walk down the quay (the riverside walkway) to the ticket booth. The activity occurs completely within the marina area. No one is allowed onto the main stem of the Delaware River. Approximate cross streets are Columbus Blvd. and Dock St.

DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM?
You do NOT need to know how to swim to participate in either program. All participants must wear PFDs (lifejackets).

HOW EASY IS IT?
This program is ideal for first time paddlers. You do NOT need upper body strength to kayak. Most people are surprised at just how easy it is! The kayaks are very stable and comfortable. Staff will help you get into the kayak and teach you basic paddling strokes to move and steer the boat. The pedal swan boats are easy to pedal with your feet like a bicycle. The water in the marina is relatively calm and away from other boat traffic.

WHAT IF I TIP OVER?
The kayaks we use for this program are very stable and comfortable. There's always a chance that you COULD tip over, but it's rare. IF you tip over, you will fall out of the boat - you are not strapped into the kayak in any way. Kayak guides will assist in getting you out of the water. The swan boats generally do not tip over.

WHAT WE PROVIDE:
We provide gear including the boat, paddle and PFD (life jacket). We have 8 solo kayaks and 3
tandem (2-person) kayaks available (420 lb weight limit on the tandem). We suggest you leave your valuables with a friend on land. We do not have lockers or storage at this time. There are 12 swan boats that each seat 2 people. A small child can also fit with 2 adults on the boat.
